Queen Mary 2 at the end of her maiden voyage coming into Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale, FL January 26, 2004

34

Cunard’s latest ship the Queen Mary 2 ended her maiden voyage on January 26, 2004 at Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This photo, taken just before sunrise, shows her coming over the horizon with the escort tugboats starting their welcoming water fountain sprays. The new Navy guided missile destroyer USS Carney that escorted the QM 2 can be seen shrouded in the distance. The excitement of her arrival is heightened by Atlantic Ocean crashing and swirling around the Fort Lauderdale jetty.

Here she is at sunrise just before entering the channel into Port Everglades. The sun is just rising above the water on her last day of her maiden voyage.

Well wishers wave as the world’s largest passenger ship completes her maiden voyage.

Here you feel the size and bulk of this ship. She has made her way down the entrance channel and is about to enter the turning pool.  In the last photo the QM 2 is in the turning pool preparing to dock at pier 21. It was quite a thrill to see the world’s largest passenger ship gracefully pirouette into position.
