Welcome to Russ Colegrove Photography
I have been taking photographs since I was about 12 years old, starting with processing my own 120 black & white film and prints. I bought my first SLR when I was 16 years old, a Canon FTb which I only sold recently after 30+ years of use. I moved from snapshots, to a teenager's version of art, to yearbook photos, some wedding photos, to serious efforts at isolating moments in nature, to travel photos, and then back to snapshots of my own young family. During all of this I have had an inner vision of photos and images that I might capture and create. More often than not I failed to get these images into a form that I might share. The desire to share these visions, while unexpressed, remained in me for many dormant years.
This website and the images that follow have a genesis in a frustrating moment and a very proud moment. In 1999 my daughter Elizabeth had been accepted to study at Oxford. My wife and I then planned a trip that summer to Ireland to visit our nephew and visit her family's homestead, and to greet Elizabeth on her first trip to Europe. Ireland, especially the West Coast, is a terribly beautiful place. I took a lot of time and a lot of my wife's patience in trying to photograph this trip. It turned into a very frustrating time for us. A lot of my equipment failed, most of my images failed, but I had a great time in Ireland and I remain very proud that this trip existed because of my daughter's accomplishments. What a contrast and great trip! When we returned home my wife, out of her stretched patience with me and my failing equipment, planted the seeds to a new love of photography by agreeing to replace some of my stuff. This lead in turn to selling everything and starting completely anew. With this came a new, but old spirit in me toward taking photographs. Each of the photos on this website was taken with the spirit of that teenager, the respect and admiration of the moment and place, and love and gratitude for my wife Maurie.The images on this site will change over time and with my interests and successes (or failures) please visit often or occasionally as you choose. Special thanks and Love to my children; Elizabeth, Russell, Stephen and Daniel....Family and friends; Susan Murphy, Janet Miller, David, Brenda, Dave and Vye Ladd, Steve and Cecilia Harris, my parents, and anyone that I have met or had a chance to share a moment in time.
A re-Dedication
This site is especially dedicated to my father. He let me use his cameras when I was very young, starting me on this long voyage of my avocation. Without his trust in me so long ago these may not have been possible. We miss you Dad.
